This catagory looks as good as any to put this warning in so here goes. Don't go with Vonage as your phone service. Most of your phone conversations will consist of "can you hear me now". I am having my service changed to Comcast as of the 27th. Mad

We've actaully had Vonage for many years now, in three different states. I'll admit I wasn't a fan at first and had similar issues as you. The worst problem we have right now isn't any fault of Vonage's, it's Comcast- we are hooked up thru Comcast's internet so when Comcast goes out- we have no phone. It happens every now and then, but I love my service now. Have you talked to them about the quality?

I also have had Vonage for a long time. The one problem I had is when I added a home security camera system to my network and started running out of available upload bandwidth. Then I could hear callers just fine but they couldn't hear me.

In my case I scaled back the camera frame per second speeds and all was well. For Vonage you will need to have about 100 kbps of upload bandwidth per Vonage primary phone number.

Also, yes obviously the ISP having constant outages will be a problem for Vonage. But you can have it ring your cell phone instead in the case of an outage. I don't know if it will effect Comcast's phone service but you might be no better off. I know Road Runner claims their phone service works even when there is an internet outage and only goes out if there is a systemwide outage of service, meaning no cable either.

Thanks for the warning. Also thanks Mirage for telling me of this site. Has it been abandoned?

That's odd. I know I posted here like 2 hours ago and it vanished.

Anyway, having a good internet is the key for any VOIP. For what it does and the cost savings it's worth a small hassle to get everything setup just right.
